The Central Brittany Journal is Brittany’s leading English-language magazine. It started publication in 2004 as a two-monthly paper. It has been monthly since early 2005, and since then has grown in size to become the largest-circulation magazine in the region.
It provides invaluable information for English-speaking residents, including a comprehensive what’s on section, classified advertisments, up to thirty pages of advertisments for local businesses, information about church services, a places-to-eat section, a letters page, computer advice, gardening, cooking, a crossword, places to visit, and a comprehensive collection of articles submitted by readers on an wide range of subjects.
The Journal has also established a role in the local community: it is only monthly magazine dedicated to Central Brittany and published in the region, and it is one of the very few truely independant publications of any sort in Brittany; it has a reputation for impartial reporting on sometimes contentious local issues such as Breton Independance, modern farming techniques, and the local economy, and as such represents a new phenomenon in France – an English-language publication at least partly serving the local French and Breton-speaking population.
The cover price of the Journal has been held at 1euro since the first issue. Subscriptions cost 18euros for 12 issues sent to an address in France, and 30euros for 12 issues sent to an address in the UK or the rest of the world. This includes the cost of first class post (as a French publication the Central Brittany Journal benefits from subsidised postal rates, and this saving is passed on to subscribers).
