“I used to make fifteen thousand faggots a year. I would work with my uncle;
he would cut the wood and I would bundle the faggots. We didn’t make them just for
ourselves, we toured the farms in the area. Each household used about two thousand to three thousand faggots a year – it depended on the size of the family. The trees were cut
every nine years. We would cut them down with a billhook, or tear the branches
off – mainly hazel and willow, and the oaks we would pollard. The larger wood was cut into logs and the rest made into faggots. I would make about one hundred and sixty faggots in a day, or two hundred at the most. This was back in 1956 – a long time ago.”
