Quintin

LA ROCHE LONGUE

This magnificent menhir (7m tall) is almost in the town of Quintin itself and can easily be walked to from the centre. It seems to be a popular visiting place for the people of the town, and there is a path which leads all the way from the parc to the rock itself, part of which is an original Chemin creux (sunken pathway, lined with high banks and, in this case, magnificent old oaks).
The Rock itself is on the edge of a farmer's field, and, depending on the time of year, cows or an electric fence might have to be negociated to get really close. As can be seen from the photo, the Roche Longue has a most distinctive shape, which makes it easy to tell apart from other menhirs - the rock is actually smaller at the bottom than half way up, something that gives it a precarious look, and makes the observer wonder haw it has managed to stay straight for so long.
