French Impressions – Brittany is packed with facts, legends and off-beat but insightful observations about this most fascinating of French regions. In this instalment of George East’s travels through France, he and his wife rent a house in the Mont d’Aree region of Central Brittany.
This wild, depopulated, but extremely beautiful area, seems to appeal to George’s love of the unconventional, and he conveys a very real impression of this often underrated part of the world and its inhabitants.
The book is laid out in the form of a diary, and as George and his wife engage in property hunting, they come across old world villages and eccentric bar owners, plus an ancient neighbour, who is amazed by many of their activities.
In all, “French Impressions, Brittany” includes reviews of over a hundred Breton towns and villages, plus dozens of regional recipes, such as the Galette des Rois, Curried Cockle Broth, Elderbery Port and Breton Apple Pie.
