Coat Liou

The forest of Coat Liou to the north-east of Bourbriac is a privately-owned woodland that is open to the public during the summer months. The local council maintains sign-posted tracks through the wood which lead to two local landmarks - La Tourelle and the Roch ar Boch - both or which are well worth a visit.

The wood is mixed - some conifers and some older sections with oaks and other native, deciduous trees. If you are visiting Brittany, you should definitely try to visit at least one of the local woods: they are exceptionally rich in wildlife, providing a home to deer, foxes, badgers, wild boar, and countless species of birds. In the deciduous woods, moss tends to grow in prodigious quantities, covering the bark of trees and rocks to a depth of one or two inches. Fungal life is also rampant, and in the Autumn mushrooms of all shapes and sizes can be found growing from tree stumps and in the thick leaf mould that covers the forest floor. Surprisingly, even forests that are freely open to the public are usually very quiet with little or no human activity to disturb the peace and quiet created by the presence of the trees. As a result, the woods and forests, such as Coat Liou, have an almost magical feel to them, providing an even more complete rest from the stresses and strains of modern life than can be found beside the sea.

The forest of Coat Liou is privately owned and closed to the public during the hunting season. The owners have kindly made it open to the public during the summer months, and the local council ensures the the paths and signs are maintained in good condition.
